A Maritime Menace: The Houthi Navy

Yemen's Houthis have managed to build up a military arsenal that exceeds the capabilities of many larger nation states. In addition to operating a wide range of Iranian-designed loitering munitions and ballistic missiles, the Houthis also field a number of naval craft, water-borne improvised explosive devices (WBIEDs), anti-ship missiles (AShMs), naval mines and even anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBMs). And although the Houthi's Navy has scarcely received any attention over the years, it has definitely left its mark on the Yemeni War. Notable feats have included the destruction of the HSV-2 Swift by an AShM in 2016, a successful WBIED attack on the Saudi frigate Al Madinah in 2017, the sinking of an Emirati minelayer in 2017 and the damaging and capture of two Saudi landing craft in 2020 and 2022. [1]

The goal of this list is to comprehensively catalogue the current inventory of drones, rockets and missiles of the Houthi rebels as well as clarify their origin. The part within apostrophes refers to the designation given by Houthis to foreign-delivered equipment. A year in square brackers after the designation refers to its perceived date of inception in Yemen. The year is only added to armament delivered or produced after the Houthi takeover of Yemen in 2014/2015.

As many observers of the Russo-Ukrainian War are awaiting the possible debut of Iranian drones with the Russian Armed Forces, relatively few know that Iranian-made and Iranian-procured armament is already in active use on the battlefields of Ukraine since at least April 2022. Rather than being used by the Russian Army, these weapons systems are deployed by Ukrainian forces in their fight against the Russian Army. The story of how these weapons ended up in Ukraine is perhaps just as fascinating as the fact of their actual presence in Ukraine, and requires us to first delve into the topic of Iranian arms trafficking to Yemen and the efforts of Western countries to combat it.

Houthi Rebels Unveil Host of Weaponry, Compounding Drone and Missile Threat

Amidst a conflict that has by now outlived the comforts of its international participants, Yemen's Houthi rebels claim to have developed new missiles and drones to use on the Saudi-led Arab Coalition supporting the government. Much of the weaponry in question appears to be 'Made in Iran' and have been utilised before in combat in the previous months and years, and there is an obvious propaganda aspect to the exhibition for the purpose of which various types of weaponry now no longer in use have been held back. Nevertheless, the threat posed by the Houthi's ballistic missiles and UAVs is evidently escalating, at a time when the intervention seems to be essentially at a standstill.

This list only includes vehicles and equipment in service with the Yemeni Army before the Houthi takeover of Yemen in 2014 and 2015. Vehicles and equipment acquired and produced during the ongoing conflict are not included in this list. The goal of this list is to comprehensively catalogue the pre-war inventory of the Yemeni Army, list the country's esoteric AFV designs as well as clarify what military equipment is currently available to Yemeni parties on the battlefield. Civilian trucks towing military trailers are not included in the list.

Saudi Aircraft Pound Al-Dailami Airbase In Yemen, Destroying U.S. Delivered Aircraft

The Saudi-led airstrikes which commenced late on the 25th of March on Yemen reportedly hit a large number of targets throughout the country, yet mainly focussed on the single S-125, three S-75 and two 2K12 SAM sites around the capital of Sana'a. Also hit early on was the airbase of al-Dailami, which shares the runway with the adjacent Sana'a International Airport.
